  1. Paint doesn't adhere very well to dirty walls. So, it is essential to clean the walls before starting the interior painting. Clean the walls with soap and water and then rinse with water once done. Let them dry overnight.

  2. Cleaning the ceilings before painting is necessary. There will be dust and cobwebs that you just don’t see. Use china bristle brush or any old paintbrush to dust baseboards, trim and crown moulding before taping them off. To avoid the seepage between pieces, overlap the tape seams by at least an inch. After this, seal the tape to the surface with a rag.

  3. Do not cover the floors with plastic as it can make the floor very slippery. Rather, use old sheets or drop cloths to protect them from drips and splatters.

  4. The colour mixer at the paint store can generate slight variations from can to can. The last thing you want is to have two shades of colour on the same wall. Before you start interior painting, you should mix all of the paint cans together. It will ensure you will have consistent colour shade throughout the room.

  5. Fill holes with spackle using a wide blade and caulk or a five-in-one tool where necessary. Use sandpaper to sand dry spackle smooth, and prime each spot.

  6. Don’t underestimate how long it’ll take you to get to finish the work. Allow at least 24 hrs to dry before bringing your furniture back into the room. Allow 14 to 30 days to cure before washing or wiping.

  7. Removing outlet covers makes for a much precise paint job. Tape the screws to the cover, and tape over the light switch or the outlet to keep paint from getting on them.
