Maximize Natural Light in Your Home Extension |
Maximising natural light makes a room feel not only brighter but also larger and more welcoming. You've come to the right place if you're renovating your home, adding an extension, or simply looking for clever design tricks to maximize natural light. Here, we'll go over the best ways to create a light-filled home and show you how to do it.
Sunlight is a natural mood booster, and if plenty of it can come in through the doors and windows you install, your customers won't have to turn on their lights as frequently, which is good for both the environment and their mental health.
There are numerous advantages to ensuring that the home extension you're working on has adequate lighting. And I'll outline some steps you can take to ensure that happens below.
1. Involve roof windows.
Many home extensions are traditionally built with a standard sloping or flat roof, leaving homeowners to rely on their traditional windows and doors to let plenty of light in. However, a few strategically placed roof windows can make all the difference.
Before beginning an extension project, you may visit a client's home several times to plan and get a sense of what they require. If possible, try to visit at different times of the day to see which areas of the house receive the most light as the sun moves throughout the day.
2. Include large windows.
The advantage of building a house extension from the ground up is that you and your client can collaborate to design a structure that is truly functional for them. While they may be dissatisfied with the amount of natural light in the rest of their house, you can make this a priority when designing this new area of their home to ensure they don't have the same reservations. Choosing and installing larger windows is an excellent way to accomplish this. Make the most of a long wall that will be exposed to a lot of sunlight by adding a window that spans the entire length of it.
3. Count on Glazing
Glazing windows helps to reduce glare during peak hours of sunlight while also increasing the amount of light that filters through the windows. Glazing is a constantly evolving technology; recently, scientists developed perovskite-tinted windows that darken in direct sunlight and harvest solar power. We like to introduce as much glazing as possible and in interesting formats in large open-plan spaces where we are involved in full renovation projects or new-builds to create light but also give a visual impact.
4. Install large mirrors Where the Light Shines
A mirror, placed directly across from a window, bounces light around the room and reflects light as if it were a window. I believe that placing large mirrors, or even an entire wall of mirrors, can double the light in a room. The placement is entirely up to you as long as they reflect natural light."
